The stomach flu: not exactly the most pleasant way to spend your backpacking trip

September 3rd, 2009 · 5 Comments

So let me tell you what’s not fun:

Hiking into the beautiful wilderness, carrying a 40-lb pack, only to develop a fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea upon arriving at your destination (a serene mountain lake). Waking up throughout the night in alternating fits of uncontrollable shivers and puddles of sweat. Needing to use the non-existent facilities at 3 am only to hear the footsteps of a creature (a bear?) patrolling the area around your tent. Packing up camp the next morning and hiking the (thankfully only) 4.5 miles to the car with a fever — and without any food in your system.

THAT was my weekend. Followed by three more days of severe abdominal pain, dashing to the bathroom every 15 minutes and one trip to the urgent care clinic for IV fluids.

I’ve gotta tell you, when I woke up on Sunday morning, I really didn’t know how I’d get home. I barely had the energy to take down my tent, let alone carry it and all of my gear out of the forest. I kept thinking to myself, “When I get home, and when I get better, I will blog about this.”

So there. I’m home, I’m better, and now I’ve blogged about this.

DAG!! What did you eat?!? I mean, something that leaves you so dehydrated that you need IV fluids is more than a case of “stomach flu”, right? Like food poisoning, maybe? And…were you camping out in the wilderness by YOURSELF?!!? What are you, nuts?!!!? (Love them question marks!)
Seriously, I’m sorry you suffered like that, and I’m glad you’re better. But, no more solo camping, OK?

I wasn’t solo camping! I was with a friend and two dogs.

Aww! No fun at all. That was one quick and ill timed flu. Rude flu!

I’m glad you’re feeling better! Have you completely given up on blogging once a week?

    Ditto the above query.
But I’m not complaining: a once-a-month blog is OK with me. However, a glance to the right to peruse the titles of RECENT ENTRIES reveals a somewhat disconcerting concentration on tales concerning the products of the malfunctioning gastro-intestinal and eliminatory systems of the blogger and her canine companion. Have you ever considered blogging about something more palatable, like, say, Portland’s reportedly fine music scene, for example ?
