File under: Things that seem like a better idea than they are

Tri-colored pasta is disgusting. And yet, I always end up buying it, for one shameful reason:

It’s bright and pretty.

This is a problem because:

a) It loses its luster once you boil it. What was once bright and pretty on the grocery store shelf almost instantaneously becomes dull and mushy.

b) It tastes awful. “Tomato” and “spinach” may sound appealing, but they aren’t, at least when processed into radiatore.

c) Cooked, it looks like The World’s Grossest Food (pasta salad).

But I guarantee I’ll buy some more the next time I go grocery shopping.

Yuck.

This made me laugh! Not only for the humor but also because I have the exact same problem! Pretty it may be but it sure is gross.

Actually, I think it looks pretty. Sort of like that wax food used in ad shoots or still-life drawings.

I think most pictures of my hairstyles and fashion (or whatever it was) from college could also fall under the seemed like a good idea file.

I have been guilty of the same and I agree with your assessment of the noodles, but when at the staff potluck if it doesn’t have mayo, it’s nearly safe.

Maybe if we stopped calling it the “Potluck of Dismay” the food would be better. Nah.

Hey, you have some dark olives in there. That’s nice.

^ Oh, I didn’t make that pasta salad. It’s just a photo I found on the good ol’ interweb. Actually, as far as pasta salads go, that one looks semi-decent. But I’ve been fooled by enough pretty pasta salads to know that it’s probably not.

I am glad I am not the only one that falls for this tri colored trick almost every time! When will we learn????

I never buy it but when it is presented to me I STILL pick around the red and green pieces like I’m five. Same with multi-colored tortilla chips.

So forget about the tri-colored stuff and go for whole-wheat pasta primavera. The whole grains are good for the digestive system, and you get all those pretty colors from the veggies.

Really? I love that stuff, yet strangley, I rarely buy it. Linguini and fettucini always call my name much more loudly.

I hate pasta salad – it just seems so very wrong

and I agree about the coloured stuff – yuck

Most of the whole wheat pastas I’ve purchased do a great job of coloring the water I boil them in. Pasta hits the plate with almost the same lifeless color as regular pasta. Squid ink pasta, now that’s beautiful!

The only pasta salad I enjoy is a caprese pasta salad. YUM!
