I’ve been tagged, courtesy of Julia Goldberg most recently and Fredday before her. I’ve been putting this off because I hate these things, but since I have nothing better to write about I’ll just cave in and do it. The original tag asked for four examples of each, but that just struck me as too much work, so I’ve modified it a bit.
::a job I’ve had::
I have never enjoyed working more than when I taught sailing and windsurfing at a summer camp. If only every task could be so fun.
::a movie I can watch over and over::
This might sound odd, but I only enjoy watching movies I’ve already seen. Therefore, I like to watch the same movies over and over again, like High Fidelity or My Cousin Vinny, and I will never tire of them. Slowly, I add new ones to my repertoire, but frankly, I’d rather not. I prefer to be comfortable with the familiar.
::a place I’ve lived::
There was a bar in my neighborhood in Chicago called Jimmy’s. The official name is the Woodlawn Tap, but everyone calls it Jimmy’s in honor of the original owner. There is a wooden sign above the bar that reads “Budweiser,” and in front of the beer logo is a 3-D wooden hand giving the middle finger. Legend has it that Jimmy once got into a heated argument with the Budweiser delivery guy, and vowed never to carry Budweiser again. To this day, that sign remains the only vestige of the Budweiser brand.
::a TV show I love::
I have a pathetic obsession with Sex and the City. I don’t even own a TV, but I love that show. It reminds me of home—same thing with Law & Order—and that’s probably because both shows were often filmed on my street. I think it’s that whole “comfortable with the familiar” thing again.
::a concert::
Asa doesn’t understand why I never get sick of listening to Graceland by Paul Simon. When I finally heard him live at the Fillmore in Denver when I was a freshman in college, he wore a red baseball cap and a white t-shirt. A short man with an inconspicuous voice, he was proof that you don’t need an overproduced stage act to hypnotize an audience.
::a vacation::
We used to go to Cape Cod for a week in the summer, and we always stayed in a house that was right on a pond with a long dock extending out to the deep part. Until Chelsea got over her fear of bellyflopping, she would stand anxiously at the edge to watch my brother and I swim, then run down the length of the dock and swim out to us from the shoreline.
::a favorite dish::
Few things in this world are more tasty than a slab of cheddar cheese melted between two pieces of sourdough bread.
::a sites I visit daily::
The way society processes history will never be the same—or maybe I’m just nerdy. I think Wikipedia is the best thing since sliced bread.
::a place I would rather be right now::
Canada?
::a thing I love about my town::
What don’t I love about Portland?
::a blogger I’m tagging::
What, are you kidding? Tag yourself.
Edit: The story I was working on last week has been published, and if you click here you’ll be able to read it and the proceeding comment in which a reader called me an “idiot.” Lovely.

It’s just mean to call someone an idiot.

I’d never heard of Platial before. I’m so out of the loop, I guess. A nice article too … no matter what some stupid tool says. By the way, this is why all anonymous Plastic.com posters have to comment under the name Anonymous Idiot.There is something to be said for how possession of maps, like any information, equals power. Once upon a time, only the rulers and nobles had maps and thus could control exploration … and the explorers themselves, the rockstars of the day, knew maps were worth their weight in gold. Who hasn’t been on a road trip with someone who won’t relinquish control of the map and their own tenuous grip on power? Having access to maps — and moreover being able to add narratives to these guides — is empowering.That said, I don’t suppose you have a map on the best way to get from Seattle to Vancouver? We would go north, I reckon, but other than that more research and map reading must happen.

I would like to say that if you are an idiot, “anonymous” is an asshole. I would also like to say that if you are not an idiot, “anonymous” is still an asshole.
WIth all due respect and all that shit, of course….I’m glad I’m not the only one who watches the same movies over and over. Spinal Tap. Geez, I can’t believe my DVD player hasn’t gone on strike for that disc yet. “Spinal Tap again? C’mon! Get a life!” LOL

Laura- I still tell people about how incredible that concert was. I don’t think it comes across, but I try… I liked Paul Simon before we went, but I didn’t have the love for him that now blossoms in my heart. I have the same thing about music that you have about movies. I do slowly take on more and more albums, but I can listen to my favorites over and over and over. It drives people mad. Muhahahaha! It’s my last day at work!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was seriously interesting. I hadn’t heard of it. I love the idea of a personal cartography. How cool would it be to visit a place thorugh the eyes of some other personality? And the same places through contrasting eyes?
Great article! Anonymous cowards can be disregarded. It’s a rule.

Being one who’s new to commenting (heh) - I accidentally left a blank-o. Regarding your link: Who uses the word “digerati?” Did I even remember that right? What an online-thesaurus-using-try-hard… HehPositive Vibes.

The only jump out one for me was movie, which atm is a toss between Closer and Phantom of the Opera. The problem with Phantom though is it’s terrible, so I spend more time trying to synch the original London sdtk up with the movie than pay attention to it.
