After it became clear on Saturday that Asa and I were not going to accomplish a single one of the many to-do items for the day, he
suggested instead taking a quick trip to the coast. I had only seen the Pacific Ocean, but never touched it, and Chelsea had never seen it
at all, so an impromptu trip to the coast to enjoy the beautiful Oregon November weather—something that anyone who has lived here for some length of time claims is highly abnormal—sounded like a wonderful idea. We were on the road in minutes, and made it there just in time to watch the sun duck behind the waves.

Chelsea was happy to be by the water again. I guess New Mexico was a little too dry for her liking. You can see her pawprints washing away behind her. Isn’t she so cute? Yeah, I think so, too.

I knit both of those hats, btw.

Here Chelsea looks a little confused. I was trying to prevent her from jumping off of the giant tree trunk we were using as a chair, because her previous jump off of a much smaller log resulted in a nasty fall. Chelsea doesn’t learn much from her mistakes, I guess.

This kind of reminds me of Myst—you know, that computer game where you walked around a mystical island looking for clues without ever figuring out what exactly was the point of the game, which, of course, didn’t stop you from playing it incessantly. Or maybe that was just me.

Wouldn’t this picture be way cooler if I had gotten the entirety of her reflection in the shot? Oh well.

See? It’s like Myst. Up around the bend you can find the library with the rotating roof. (Does anyone get that reference? Maybe there was no rotating roof library in Myst. What if I made that up entirely? Am I going crazy? Maybe I was cryogenically frozen in 1802 and just don’t know it yet.)

Speaking of crazy, I’m deathly afraid of certain kinds of seaweed and plants, including but not limited to Venus fly traps, marshlands, skunk cabbages and seaweed that looks like a giant pile of lo mein (note the edge of the pile of lo mein in the bottom left corner of this picture). Asa thinks these terrifying ocean plants are fascinating and make good didgeridoos, so he brought one home for our friend Jeff, who found it endlessly amusing to torture me by sticking that nasty piece of seaweed in my face. GROSS.

Although I know Chelsea is old she certainly does look like a pup in those pictures. They are beautiful photos. What a beautiful place.

Those are great photos! Chelsea looks happy to be trotting around in the water. Those are excellent hats, by the by. I’m a terrible knitter, so I’m jealous of your talents!

Venus fly traps. Aren’t those things…like….carniverous? Maybe I watched too many cartoons when I was a kid, I dunno. You’re dog is adorable. The sheepdog I have right now is getting really old and I’ve already planned my next dog’s name: Garfunkel Stalwart LeStrange-Hauber (I know, I have a huge last name).

I love that.

I remember the first time I saw the Pacific Ocean … it was a drive from Seattle way out to Ruby Ridge. Just an amazing awesome sight … sort of like the end of the world, the mythical grail of pioneers from centuries past. Those strange rocky outcrops, the mist, it was all so similar.Lest I forget to say so to one of my favorite bloggers: Hope you have a very happy Thanksgiving!

That’s so incredibly beautiful. You got some amazing shots! And thanks for the Myst reference… so funny. I haven’t thought about that game in years.
ryc — yeah, microwaves for cooking are not something I enjoy, or generally overuse (except, as mentioned, for baked potatoes, which were pretty much my sustenance for several years)… you’re not really missing out on anything, don’t worry, and you’ll probably be healthier for it in the end!

I SO know what you’re referring to when you mention the computer game “Myst”!!! I was addicted to that game in high school for so long! The music always freaked me out, however, and how quiet it was in certain parts! Did you ever play one of the sequels? I played Riven until I graduated high school…then I gave it all up! My parents still play, however! How funny that someone else knows about it! Great photos, too! The shore is gorgeous! Love it! And Chelsea is adorable!

That really looks like Short Sands, over in Oswald State Park… If it is, then that was the beach I’ve talked about this last summer, where we hiked in drank lots. We seem to always either end up on that beach or somewhere within 50 miles of it. It’s the easiest one to get to from where I’m at.
Myst. ha. I played that for a bit, but I think I got frustrated and let it go after too long. I remember how big that and the other one was… Wasn’t it called Raven or something?
Nice hats, btw. I’d pay exorbitant amounts for one.

Are you taking knitted hat orders? I’d like one.

Stainwad,
Chels-a-bagee is SOOOO cute! She looks cleaner than I remember. Are you bathing her? Even if she smells like roses, she’ll always be a Stink.
Love,
Stain
