Where procrastination comes to flourish

Duh, why make it easy on ourselves?

July 27th, 2005 · 17 Comments

I suppose that procrastination comes to flourish at my website for a reason—I’m pretty freaking good at doing it. Consider my credentials:

· I put off writing my thesis for almost two months of the allotted two months I had to write my thesis.

· I once stayed up until four a.m. making paper snowflakes out of the New York Times Magazine instead of studying.

· I have written (and posted) a top ten list of the best ways to procrastinate.

· My mother always says, “You were born late, and you never really caught up.”

· I have actually made an ASCII pictogram of my name.

· I have read the literature on the back of every shampoo bottle I have ever owned for the sole purpose of extending my shower time (and because the words “rinse, lather, repeat” simply never get boring).

· Sometimes I take the long way home just because I don’t want to do whatever it is I have to do when I get there.

· I am writing this list instead of working up questions for the interview I need to do tomorrow morning.

Sure, it only makes things more difficult when you leave them for the last minute. But really, if I went through life in a timely fashion, when would I ever have time to blog?

hahaha, I just clicked on your site because I’m procrastinating from my very last project that I have to hand in and present to about 30 people in 7 hours.  It’s worth 11 university credits (almost 4 courses), yet here I am checkin’ out your blog instead of finishing it off like a normal person.
    Such an appropriate post :)

I am so jiving with bullet #1 right now….

I procrastinate because I’m a pressure performer and sometimes that’s the only way I can get things done. This is usually the case with dull stories: I’ll do the interviews well in advance but not necessarily find the motivation until deadline looms.

I wish I could procrastinate, because it might mean that I worked well under pressure. I don’t. I suck at it. I get all jittery and weepy-feeling. I always like to have a head start. Also, I need extra time becuase I’m not a naturally keen editor. I need a dew days and a fresh par of eyes each time to edit my writing, to finalize things. I think your ability to flourish after procrastination will make you a kick-ass journalist. I could never deal with having a publishable thing due daily–that short time frame would kill me. Who are you interviewing?

When I was in college, I was more creative and much more analytical when I would wait until the very last minute to do the research papers or whatnot. For some reason, I always understood the assignment much better and could give greater insight at 4 a.m. the morning the paper was due.

Making that ACSII pictogram must have taken some time to do . WOW!

Oh, to be in the same boat, and I know the feeling, I sorta can’t help it whatsoever.  Need to get stuff done, eh, well three or so days later doesn’t really matter.  I really should attempt to fix this lol.

And when would you have time to comment on other people’s blogs?
What did you write your thesis on?  Also, that’s an awful thing for EK to say.  You are hardly slow.
Just a little touched, that’s all.

Great list!  (right now, incidentally, I have actual work to be done)  And, I feel great because not only have I done those things as a means of procrastination, (including downloading Alice’s Restaurant).  but also that you made that list on my birthday.  So there’s got to be something cosmic going on there.  Ooh!  That’s something you could investigate: cosmic forces in making lists that another person has done on that other person’s birthday.  And the other person doesn’t know.  Yes, my fellow procrastinator, I have come up with something else for us to do.  :)

I kill hours and hours on the internet, in books, the television…when I should be studying. I always put off studying at the worst times, like during finals when it’s cumulative and then I get pissed off because I get an A- because of one stupid test. One thing I am looking forward to doing is writing my thesis and hopefully I will not put it off until the last minute like I usually do. Nice doggie, reminds me of a panda. My best friend says that I laugh hysterically and go crazy when I see a picture of a panda. I think he just likes to poke fun. Take care.

i so see myself in this entry:-).  particularly bullet points 2, 4, 6, and 7.  i swear the reason i love xanga so much is that it is the best internet-related procrastination tool i have ever found.  you know the time when the adrenaline starts going because you’ve procrastinated for so long that whatever it is has to get done in way not enough time?  i can be such a fucking genious then!  makes me want to go read my lubriderm bottle for the hundreth time :-D.

I wrote my thesis in 3 days.  Got a B+.  Not too shabby.

    I like your dog.
I bet I’m a better procrastinator than you.

Except when it is time to hit the slopes….you almost lead the pack.

we need to have a procrastination contest…

Ha!  I love the one about making paper snowflakes.  That’s just great.
I, too, am procrastinating as we speak.  I knew 4 weeks ago all the shit I’d have to do for the bachelorette party this weekend, and have I done any of it yet?  No.
    I suck.

Your procrastination list is exactly what I needed to avoid doing what I was supposed to do this morning. Thanks!
