Where procrastination comes to flourish

In the name of research

July 3rd, 2005 · 11 Comments

The life of an intern is very, very hard. We give up all our very precious free time in exchange for thankless tasks such as filing, transcribing, scaling Mount Everest, etc., all for the glory of having our names on the masthead in the “Slave Labor” department.?

Case (of beer) in point:

Nate the Staff Writer was researching a story on the infiltration of Portland microbrews in the Santa Fe market. Apparently, he took the suggestion I had made for a Portland-Santa Fe beer showdown pretty seriously, and really, who better to be the lab rats than the interns? That is, after all, what we’re here for — to do the work that no one else wants to do.

And so kicked off an hour-long fiasco of blind taste-testing, during which time the following assessments were made:

· “This beer tastes like moldy armpits”
· “It smells like kitty litter”
· “Nate, are you sure you didn’t piss in this?”
· “Am I drinking rotten orange juice?”

In the end, Portland beers won out 6-4. After all, this makes sense: Oregon is known for its rain and its microbrews, and New Mexico is known for its chili peppers and high rates of unemployment. Beer, it seems, is not one of its fortes.

When the sampling was done, of course, the two six-packs worth of half-drunken beer just had to be finished. I mean, really, New Mexico is also known for its droughts, and surely we can’t throw away beer when there is barely enough hydration to water the city! That’s like not finishing your food when there are starving children in underdeveloped countries.

And who better to finish off the beers than the interns (and Nate)?

It’s a hard job, but somebody has to do it.

The sacrifices you make for your work. You should be proud, and perhaps a bit hung over. Cheers!

Ugh, now those are some sickly comments about beer. Like, no beer actually tastes “good” as in candy or a nice steak, but when compared to each other some taste better and such. My favorite beer is called Blue Moon. Has a hint of blueberries it does! Take care.

Wow.  Sounds like extremely hard work.  That is almost as bad as my job but without the drinking part.
